Keep people and pets away from the flight path, shut the windows and doors nearest the entry point, bring washing and food indoors, and stop mowing or using blowers and power tools anywhere near it. Do not spray it, do not block the hole and do not go up a ladder to look. A nest that has been left alone is a far safer and quicker job than one that has been provoked.

No, and it is the single most common thing that turns a manageable job into an expensive one. A sealed colony does not suffocate; it chews a new exit, and the softest material is almost always the internal plaster lining rather than the external brick or weatherboard. That puts the wasps inside the house. Leave the entrance open so it can be treated through it, and seal it after the colony is dead.

It depends on the species, where the nest sits and how safely it can be reached. A paper wasp comb under a low pergola is quick work; a European wasp nest in a wall cavity, under a slab or at roof height needs more time, more gear and often a dusk return. The number of nests matters too - properties backing onto parkland or a creek line often have more than one. You get a fixed price up front, with no call-out fee.

Dusk matters because the foragers are home by then, so the whole colony is present and returning workers carry the treatment deep into the comb. Once the colony is dead, accessible nests are bagged and taken away rather than left in your roof.

On a small paper wasp comb you can reach standing on the ground, it sometimes works. On a European wasp nest it does not - the spray hits the wasps at the opening while the colony sits deeper in the cavity, so the nest survives and becomes noticeably more defensive afterwards. That makes the professional visit harder and the wait more dangerous. Most serious injuries we hear about come from the ladder, not the stings.

No. Agriculture Victoria records the European wasp as so widespread here that it is now considered naturalised and is no longer a notifiable pest, so there is no legal duty to report one. Be wary of anyone implying otherwise to hurry you into booking. The reason to deal with it is practical rather than legal: European wasps sting repeatedly and defend the nest as a group.

Yes. A colony started by a single queen in spring peaks in late summer and autumn, which is when nests are biggest and wasps turn up around bins, drinks and barbecues. Colonies usually die off over winter, though Agriculture Victoria notes that mild southern winters let some nests survive - and an overwintered nest starts the next season with a head start rather than from scratch, so it can get very large.
